Web Developer Skills for Social Media Age – Version 1

Web development has become more and more sophisticated. New technologies and techniques to integrate web applications are emerging rapidly. I have divided the web development skills into three different levels.

Level 1 Expertise

Level 1 expertise is the base minimum expertise level to work in web development. This includes the following list.

HTML5
JavaScript
Database and SQL queries
PHP and/or other development languages
Cascading Style Sheet
Web Browsers
Blogging Platforms (WordPress, Drupal)
Version control system

Level 2 Expertise

Level 2 expertises distinguish an entry-level web developer from an experienced web developer. These are listed below

Running Web Servers, knowledge of commonly used web servers like Apache, Microsoft SQL server
Security, Authentication
Operating Systems
Social Media Integration (API, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)
Design
Messaging
Analytics, at least using Google Analytics
Graphic API
AJAX frameworks like jQuery
JSON
XML and XML web services
RESTful web services
Geo locations

Level 3 Expertise

Level 3 expertises will make you an architect of web applications and technologies.

Networking
Debugging and sniffing tools
Performance
Enterprise applications
Hadoop, distributed applications
Laws and regulations related to Email/SPAM, Privacy
Encryption
Mobile devices
Load balancing, data replication, failsafe applications development
Designing and Providing APIs for integration
Knowing multiple web application development frameworks and choosing appropriate framework for specific applications. This includes starting from PHP frameworks to J2EE, .Net, Ruby/Rails, etc.

HITRUST releases CSF version 4.0

HITRUST (Health Information Trust Alliance) has published new version of Common Security Framework aka CSF. CSF provides organizations to achieve same standard for protecting healthcare information. The new CSF assurance certification requirements have the following major changes:

One control removed from the CSF assurance requirements.
Twelve controls added to CSF assurance requirements.
The new CSF is more in line with industry trends and suggestions from experts.
Common Health Information Framework (CHIP) questionnaire.
CSF compliance worksheet.

Open Source IaaS Cloud Computing Environments

Two open source cloud projects are quite interesting:

Openstack (http://openstack.org). This consists of three major components (Compute, Object Storage, and Image Service).
Eucalyptus (http://open.eucalyptus.com/) which is an open source version of Amazon cloud services and provides similar API as Amazon.

Both projects provide extensive information about concepts and installation of software and its operations. Worth trying!

Considerations for developing cloud-ready applications

Developing application that are cloud-ready need some additional consideration compared to traditional applications developments. For example:

When you build traditional applications that are hosted within your data center, you may not be too much concerned about middleware like message queues or enterprise bus. However, if you are developing applications for a PaaS (Platform as a Service) cloud, the message queues may be a shared service and you would consider encrypting data before placing it on message queues.
As for as storage is concerned, your internal data storage is in your control but in most of the cloud environment, the data storage may be shared. So you would consider encrypting data.

When you use a SaaS (Software as a Service) type cloud environment, most probably you will use APIs exposed by the cloud vendor. While selecting the SaaS model application, make sure that the APIs meet your needs.

Per “10 minutes on boardroom agenda” published by PWC (http://www.pwc.com/us/en/10minutes/boardroom-agenda.jhtml), filling director positions on BoD (Board of Directors) with people who have experience in IT is difficult. Interesting read!
